Decline in demand for antispasmodics resumes in Russia

Russians are gradually abandoning antispasmodics. This trend was relevant in 2023–2024, and only in 2025 did physical sales in this drug group grow by a modest 1%. More than half of the top products show a decline in physical consumption.

In January–July 2026, 24.3 million packages of drugs from the group of antispasmodics and simple anticholinergics (group A03A) were sold on the Russian retail market, which is 3.3% less than in the same period last year. Ruble sales volume for the period amounted to RUB 6.3 billion (at retail prices, including VAT), with dynamics also relatively modest (+6.1%). It should be noted that the decline in physical consumption in the category is not a new trend; this process was already actively underway in 2023–2024, when the volume of packages sold decreased by 2.2% and 2.7%, respectively. Only 2025 stood somewhat apart from this trend, when Russians purchased 43.8 million packages worth RUB 10.5 billion, with physical sales growing by 1% compared to 2024 and ruble volume increasing by a record 14.2% for this group.

According to the "Retail Audit of Drug Sales in Russia (total sell out)" from the analytical company RNC Pharma, 34 brands from 60 different manufacturers were represented in the category this year, with the total number of products unchanged over the past year. The absolute leader in terms of monetary consumption volume is No-Spa from Sanofi, accounting for 37.7% of the market's monetary volume. However, despite an 8% increase in monetary sales, package sales declined by 1.7%. This is offset by larger consumer packages: when recalculated in minimum dosage units (MDU), consumption volumes grew by 5% over the year. Interestingly, physical demand for unbranded drotaverine drugs, which collectively account for 11.5% of the market, is also falling noticeably despite positive ruble dynamics (+7%), declining in both packages (-0.8%) and MDU (-1.4%). Sales here are provided by 29 manufacturers, with Velfarm Group the absolute leader.

The highest ruble dynamics in the top ten are demonstrated by Iberogast from Bayer HealthCare, with demand for this drug increasing by 53% over the year; notably, the dynamics were entirely driven by physical consumption growth. This is likely related to recovery after supply disruptions recorded in late 2023 and throughout 2024. Among the leaders in growth rates, generic mebeverine drugs should also be mentioned. In particular, sales of unbranded generics increased by 40% compared to January–July 2025, which is already affecting demand for Duspatalin from Abbott, where ruble dynamics are minimal (+0.1%). Among high-growth drugs, it is also important to mention Buscopan (Sanofi); despite the emergence of generic drugs, it is not yet ceding its positions, with ruble growth recorded at 10% compared to January–July 2025.
