The Russian retail market has recorded a decline in physical consumption volumes of local contraceptives for the fourth consecutive year. However, most intrauterine systems continue to show steady growth, and this segment is also being replenished with new products.

In January–July 2026, the Russian retail market saw a decline in physical demand for local contraceptives (intrauterine devices and vaginal products). In the first seven months of 2026, 735.3 thousand packages of contraceptives in this category were sold on the retail market (including the online channel), amounting to RUB 2.2 billion (at retail prices, including VAT). Ruble spending on this group of drugs and medical devices increased by 4% compared to the same period in 2025, while physical consumption decreased by 8.4%. A similar trend was recorded last year, when total consumer spending increased by 8% — to RUB 3.7 billion — against a 3.8% decline in physical sales, to 1.4 million packages. The key driver of sustained growth in the market's monetary volume amid prolonged decline in physical demand is a significant shift in consumer preferences toward more expensive products; over the past few years, the average price per package in the category has increased by 58%.

The entire product portfolio of the category is formed by just eight corporations, with over 88% of the total market's value volume controlled by two foreign manufacturers — Bayer HealthCare with a 50% share and Organon (39%). The brand ranking is led by the intrauterine therapeutic system Mirena from Bayer HealthCare, which accounts for 42.6% of the group's total retail revenue. This brand is the only one in the TOP-5 to show positive sales growth (+11% in rubles). In second place, with a minimal margin, is the intravaginal system NuvaRing from Organon, accounting for 39% of the group's value volume; in physical terms, NuvaRing is the absolute leader in the category, accounting for more than half of all packages sold. The remaining market participants are significantly behind the two key players. Third place is held by another intrauterine system from Bayer HealthCare — the low-dose Jaydess (Kailina), with a 7% monetary share. In fourth place is the brand Pharmatex (INN benzalkonium chloride) from Innotek with a 6.5% share; the brand is represented by a line of suppositories, creams, and other dosage forms, but its sales decreased by 7% in rubles and 15% in packages over the year. Rounding out the top five is the new product Donasert (INN levonorgestrel) from Gedeon Richter, which entered the market at the beginning of this year. It is positioned as a more affordable analogue of Mirena and has already captured 2.2% of ruble sales.

Outside the top tier, the most pronounced decline in sales was shown by the Nonoxynol brand from Amkapharm, with spending falling by 21% over the year. Consumption of non-hormonal (metal-containing) IUDs from the Juno line also declined significantly. Total sales of this brand line (including Juno Bio) decreased by 9% in ruble terms, primarily due to outdated models with rigid insertion systems, which are losing market share.
