The peak in retail sales of feed additives for pets occurs in March, one month earlier than veterinary medicines

According to information from the database “Audit of retail sales of veterinary medicines in Russia (total sell out)” by the analytical company RNC Pharma, in January-April 2025, 88.8 million minimum dosage units (MDUs) of veterinary medicines were sold on the Russian retail market (including online channels), which is 12.5% higher than in the same period last year. The monetary volume of veterinary retail sales amounted to 16.6 billion rubles (at retail prices, including VAT), and compared to January-April 2024, the market grew by 14.3% in Russian currency. The natural volume of the animal feed additives market is more than twice the consumption of veterinary medicines. In the first four months of this year, Russians purchased 204.5 million MDUs (+12.2% compared to January-April 2024), but the monetary volume of sales in this category is significantly lower, with total expenditures amounting to 1.3 billion rubles (+9.7%).

The peak consumption of veterinary medicines and feed additives traditionally occurs in the spring months. In the case of dietary supplements, maximum sales are usually recorded in March, while peak demand for medicines occurs in April. In April of this year, 25.8 million MDUs of animal medicines were sold at retail, with buyers spending more than 5.4 billion rubles. The dynamics in relation to April last year was +3.5% in real terms, while the monetary volume decreased (-4.5%). The highest figures for natural consumption in the feed additives category were recorded in March, with 55 million MDUs sold in retail outlets during the month (+11.9% compared to March 2024) for a total of 355.8 million rubles (+9.6%).

A significant portion of consumer spending on veterinary medicines in the first four months of the year was accounted for by products from the American company Zoetis, which accounts for 13.4% of the ruble volume of the retail market for veterinary medicines. Compared to January-April 2024, the value of sales of this manufacturer's product range increased by 12.5% in rubles and by 4.2% in MDU. Russian company Ekoprom rose to second place in the ranking, accounting for 10.4% of total sales in rubles and providing about 6% of natural consumption in the market. The dynamics of sales of this company's products was recorded at +14.7% in value terms and +4.6% in volume terms.

Of the top 10 corporations leading in terms of sales value in January-April 2025, five manufacturers are domestic. The absolute leader in terms of sales volume is the Russian company Agrovetzaschita, which accounts for almost 18% of the veterinary medicine market in the MSU. From January to April, buyers purchased about 16 million units of this company's products (+34.5% compared to January-April 2024). The Russian company Vetbiochem showed the highest sales growth among the top ten, with the sales volume of the company's product range doubling over the year, both in rubles and in natural terms. During the period under review, the volume of consumption of key foreign companies’ product range continued to decline, such as Elanco (-36% in MDU), MSD (-49%), and Boehringer (-19%).

In the feed additives category, Ecoprom is the leading corporation, accounting for 15.4% of all ruble sales of feed additives in retail. Compared to January-April last year, the company's sales increased by 19.7% in rubles, but stagnated in physical units (-0.1%). The French corporation Nestlé retains second place in the ranking with a 14.6% share of sales. During the reporting period, sales dynamics were recorded at 34.8% in rubles. The company's actual consumption of products increased 4 times over the year, which is associated with an increase in sales of the Fortiflora Canine brand for dogs No. 30 (7-fold increase in sales). The top ten corporations are mostly represented by domestic manufacturers, one of which, Veda, ranks third in the rating with a share of 11.1%, ensuring sales dynamics relative to January-April 2024 at +33.4% in rubles and +94.4% in MDU.

Probiotics, a British company, also distinguished itself in the TOP 10, demonstrating impressive sales growth of around 70% in both rubles and MDU.
