Testosterone drugs show steadily high demand despite some brands leaving the Russian pharmaceutical market and shortages of certain products

Sales statistics for testosterone drugs in Russia reflect the global trend toward growing popularity of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), but have their own local characteristics related to product availability and the regulation of such drugs (injectable dosage forms are subject to PKU). The high dynamics are largely associated with the concept of combating age-related androgen deficiency, in which testosterone drugs act as a kind of "elixir of youth."

Based on the results of 2025, total Russian spending on androgens1 increased by 13.5% and exceeded RUB 1.49 billion (at retail prices, including VAT). For comparison, in 2022, the retail market for testosterone drugs did not exceed RUB 884.1 million. Physical consumption also grew at double-digit rates for three consecutive years — last year, over 525.2 thousand packages of such drugs were sold at retail, with physical demand increasing by 10.7% over the year. However, at the beginning of this year, physical demand for the group decreased by 9.6% compared to Q1 2025, although spending on the category grew by 12.5%. The problems in 2026 are associated with a shortage of Omnadren (Bausch Health), which was last supplied to our country in May 2025.

According to the "Retail Audit of Drug Sales in Russia (total sell out)" from the analytical company RNC Pharma, the most sought-after testosterone drug on the retail market is AndroGel from the Belgian company Besins Healthcare. In 2025, it accounted for 64% of physical demand and approximately 68% of all spending in the group. The drug is produced in the form of a topical gel packaged in single-dose sachets. AndroGel is not included in the PKU list, which significantly simplifies access to the drug, although it is classified as a prescription product.

The next most popular androgen in our country is the injectable drug from the German manufacturer Bayer under the brand Nebido, with the marketing authorization holder in Russia being Swixx Healthcare. The drug accounted for approximately 11% of physical and 23.2% of monetary sales volume. This drug is administered intramuscularly, is included in the PKU list, and is available only in certain pharmacy institutions that work with the relevant product range. Third place in the brand ranking is occupied by Omnadren. In 2025, the drug accounted for 8.6% of the total monetary and nearly 25% of the physical market volume. It is important to note that previously, a capsule-form drug under the brand Andriol from MSD was available on the market, but it was excluded from the State Register at the request of the copyright holder and completely disappeared from legal sale by 2022. More recently, the injectable drug Sustanon from Aspen Holdings was also excluded from the State Register of Medicines. Currently, only four brands of testosterone drugs are officially registered in Russia, among them only one domestic brand — Testosterone Propionate from Dalchimpharm. However, this drug was last released into circulation in 2021, but it has a fairly long shelf life (5 years), so remaining stock has been sold off over the last two years in quantities of several hundred packages per year, and the product thus accounts for a very small share (0.46%) of the total physical sales volume.
