The Russian retail veterinary drug market is being transformed by accelerated import substitution and changing consumer preferences. Domestic manufacturers are rapidly displacing foreign competitors from the ranks of leaders, particularly by actively increasing sales in the online segment.

The Russian veterinary retail market demonstrates steady upward dynamics with double-digit growth rates. In January–July 2026, consumption volume of veterinary drugs amounted to 187.2 million minimum dosage units (MDU), which is 19.1% higher than in the same period last year. In monetary terms, the market increased by 21.2%, reaching RUB 36.3 billion (at retail prices, including VAT).

The main catalyst for the industry's development is accelerated import substitution. The process of structural market transformation accelerated sharply in 2025, when the value share of domestic manufacturers exceeded parity for the first time, reaching 54.3% (versus 48.1% a year earlier). In January–July 2026, the expansion of local brands intensified, providing them with 57.5% of the market in ruble terms. In physical terms, the dominance of Russian products is even more pronounced, at 75.3%. The high dynamics are confirmed by faster growth rates: in the first seven months of 2026, retail sales of domestic drugs increased by 22% in MDU and 28% in monetary terms year-on-year, twice the comparable figures for the imported assortment.

In January–July 2026, more than 230 corporations represented their products on the Russian retail veterinary drug market. During this period, the segment included approximately 1.8 thousand brands. Despite the overall dominance of domestic companies, the American company Zoetis has held the lead in veterinary retail for four consecutive years — in the first seven months of this year, it accounted for 13.6% of all monetary sales in the market. Second place in the company ranking has been retained since last year by the Russian company Ecoprom with a 9.4% share, while third place, with a slight margin, remains with the Slovenian KRKA (9.1% share). Fourth place is stably held by the domestic company Agrovetzashchita with an 8.3% share. Notable upward dynamics were demonstrated by another Russian manufacturer — Vetbiokhim, which increased its share to 7.5% and took fifth place in the ranking.

The highest dynamics among top companies during the reporting period were demonstrated by Vetfarmstandart, whose sales of the drug Tixfli increased 3-fold over the year. Faster revenue growth was also demonstrated by Nita-Pharm (+80% in monetary terms) and Apicenna (+30%).

Against the backdrop of the expansion of local manufacturers, a noticeable weakening of positions is observed for certain foreign suppliers. In the TOP-10 key players, negative dynamics in value terms were demonstrated by two American corporations: over the year, Elanco sales decreased by 2%, and MSD by 18% in rubles. The factors behind the decline differ: while Elanco's decline is due to weak performance of secondary brands, for MSD the determining factor was the reduction in sales of the key brand Bravecto, which accounted for 97% of the company's value indicators in retail. For these and a number of other foreign companies, the online channel has recently become the main sales channel, while traditional retail shows stagnation in supplies from foreign manufacturers (-1% in MDU). At the same time, Russian products in the e-commerce segment show four times the growth rate of offline. Compared to January–July 2025, online purchases of domestic animal drugs increased by 71% in monetary terms, while sales through traditional retail outlets increased by 19%.
