Retail sales of the hypoglycemic drug Forxiga from AstraZeneca exceeded 5.1 million packages worth RUB 13.3 billion in 2025 (at retail prices, including VAT). Demand showed tremendous dynamics: compared to 2024, the physical volume increased by 49%, and the ruble volume grew by 54%. Comparable growth rates in pharmacy sales were also observed in 2023–2024. This year, the dynamics have begun to slow but are still in double digits. From January 1 to June 24, 2026, more than 3 million packages of dapagliflozin drugs were sold at retail for a total of RUB 7.9 billion. The growth rate compared to the same period in 2025 was 37.1% in packages and 35.3% in ruble terms. So far, generic drugs containing dapagliflozin have not had an impact on the dynamics, as industrial-scale sales of Forxiga generics only started in June 2026. However, their emergence in the near future could significantly change the balance of power in the relevant category.

Strictly speaking, sales of generic dapagliflozin drugs in Russian pharmaceutical retail had already been recorded starting in May 2024, but they lasted only six months and failed to achieve significant volumes due to a patent dispute between generic manufacturers and the originator company. The litigation effectively lasted for two years, and it was only starting in April 2026 that we recorded the resumption of retail sales of generic products. The first reliable sales of the drug Dapoforce from KRKA in Russian pharmacies were recorded on April 1, when only 3 packages were sold. Over the following two months, the daily sales volume of this drug increased minimally, averaging only about 19 packages per day. On June 1, 2026, sales of another generic — the drug Fordiglif from Akrikhin — began in pharmacies. Only 9 packages were sold that day, but the numbers then began to grow rapidly. By June 8, pharmacies sold more than 1,000 packages of generic drugs in a single day for the first time. The absolute maximum was reached on June 16, when generic dapagliflozin sales approached 7.5 thousand packages. For comparison, Forxiga sales on that day exceeded 21.2 thousand packages, so the share of generic drugs in the total volume reached a maximum of about 26% in packages. Thereafter, generic sales stabilized at approximately 2.8 thousand packages per day, with the exception of the weekends of June 20–21, when market activity traditionally declines.

In total, from June 1 to 24, Russian pharmacies sold 43.5 thousand packages of generic dapagliflozin drugs worth RUB 55.9 million. In the total volume, they already account for a notable share of 9.5% in packages and about 4.8% in monetary terms. However, this has not yet affected Forxiga sales dynamics. Compared to the period of June 1–24, 2025, sales of the AstraZeneca drug increased by 29.5% in packages (to 416.5 thousand units) and by 31.5% in ruble terms, with revenue exceeding RUB 1.1 billion in the less-than-full month.
